An Analysis and Assessment of the Farsh Readings of Qira’a Attributed to Asim and al-Ḥasan al-Basri

Abstract

This study explores comparative farshī qirāʾāt differences across the ṣaḥīḥ and shādh traditions. While the authorization to recite the Qurʾān in accordance with “seven aḥruf” provided a natural basis for the emergence of diverse qirāʾāt, early evaluations of these readings relied primarily on the reliability of their transmission chains (isnād). By the end of the second Hijrī century, the criteria for determining the validity of qirāʾāt had become systematized: qirāʾāt were first classified into ṣaḥīḥ and shādh, and each category was further divided into uṣūl and farsh. The farsh dimension, in particular, has gained prominence in qirāʾāt scholarship due to its potential impact on meaning. In this context, the aim of the study is to identify the points of similarity and difference between the farshī qirāʾāt attributed to the ṣaḥīḥ qirāʾāt imams and those attributed to the shādh qirāʾāt imams. Given the breadth of the subject, the scope of this study has been limited to a selected portion of the farshī qirāʾāt attributed to ʿĀṣim, among the ṣaḥīḥ qirāʾāt imams, and to Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, who is associated with the shādh qirāʾāt tradition. Although the literature includes various studies on farsh differences, the absence of an independent work directly comparing the farsh aspects of ṣaḥīḥ and shādh qirāʾāt renders this research necessary and enhances its scholarly significance. The study employs a literature-review methodology, and general conclusions concerning the qirāʾāt attributed to both the ṣaḥīḥ and shādh qirāʾāt imams have been drawn from the farshī qirāʾāt examples ascribed to the aforementioned imams. he findings indicate that the farsh-related readings of the ṣaḥīḥ and shādh imāms exhibit a considerable degree of similarity. This result highlights the importance of considering practical recitational practice alongside theoretical criteria when evaluating qirāʾāt
