The Teaching of the Quran in the Digital Age: The Role of Technology and Social Media in Quran Education

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the accelerated digitalization process during the COVID-19 pandemic on Qurʾān education, focusing on lessons delivered via social media platforms (e.g., YouTube, Instagram, Zoom, WhatsApp) and remote learning systems. It assesses the advantages (e.g., accessibility, flexibility, personalized learning) and limitations (e.g., limited face-to-face interaction, technical constraints, challenges in tajwīd and recitation) of digital instruction using various data sources. The aim is to identify opportunities and challenges in integrating digital tools into Qurʾān education and propose a model blending traditional and digital methods. A qualitative approach based on document analysis was used, drawing on surveys from educators and learners, along with literature and social media content. The review shows a lack of focus in current studies on the pedagogical potential of technology in this field, especially regarding social media tools. Findings highlight the importance of face-to-face teaching for recitation (tilāwa) and pronunciation (taṣḥīḥ al-tilāwa), while acknowledging digital learning's benefits—such as constant access and self-paced study. In conclusion, digital methods cannot fully replace traditional Qurʾān education but can complement it effectively. Sustainable digital Qurʾān instruction requires improved infrastructure, enhanced digital pedagogy for educators, and the development of hybrid models.
