Value and Existence
Abstract
In the studies on value, it is seen that studies on the ontology of value come at the forefront. In addition to this, the problems of evaluation and the nature of value judgment, based on who and according to what value is measured as per the conditions of its existence, also emerge as issues discussed on value. These discussions on the ontological and epistemological status of value are sometimes addressed with the ideas that value is undefinable, and sometimes with views that link value to a specific purpose and benefit. The fact that value is related to more than one field brings along the difficulties of definition caused by different disciplines. Each statement such as “it is valuable”, “it is a value” or “it has a value” reveals a certain use of value. This study discusses subjective and objective values arising from the confusion in the concept of value. It is thought that the verbal forms of value judgement are the source of the confusion arising from the term value. In this context, the study contains important suggestions in terms of the philosophy of value through examples of the use of these verbal forms.
