Basic Principles of Islamic Political Ethics Featured in Siyasatnama Literature

Abstract

The conduct of politics, defined as the art of governing people that arises from the need of humanity to live in society, on moral grounds and in a legitimate manner has been an important subject of discussion of debate in all centuries. Every faith, philosophy and culture has implemented legal and ethical measures to keep politics on this legitimate ground. The Siyasatnama literature is an example of the accumulation of wisdom as a result of the blending of inspiration from the fundamental sources of Islam with human experience, and such a product can be considered as an equivalent endeavor. It is important that the wise accumulation of Siyasatnama literature, which aims to find the formula for a peaceful and prosperous political order and is a reflection of the political and social functioning of the time in which it was written, be updated and carried to the present day. In this study, the comprehensive and guiding principles of Islamic political ethics, namely diyānah, amānah, justice and mashwarah are analyzed in the light of the pioneering authors and works of the siyasatnama literature. In general, the literature of The Ahqam al-Sultaniyya, which examines the Islamic political system from a legal point of view, was referred to as needed. Although the study was based on reference to primary sources, current research that was thought to contribute to the research was also consulted. The main objective of this study is to convey the fundamental principles of state governance, derived from centuries of accumulated political and social experience, to today’s society.
