Non-Muslim Women who Translated the Qur’an and Their Translations

Abstract

Non-Muslims’ efforts to translate the Holy Qur’an go back a long way. The first complete translation of the Qur’an by a non-Muslim was made in 1141-1142. Although there was no second translation of the Qur’an for approximately five hundred years after this, activities to translate the Qur’an started again, especially from the sixteenth century onwards. Until the 2000s, many translations of the Qur’an were made by non-Muslims all over the world, mostly in the West. There are also women who translated the Qur’an even though they are non-Muslims. This study focuses on these women and their translations. In addition to introducing the translations of non-Muslim women, the article also provides some information about the women who made them. Furthermore, based on the information obtained, the topics that are discussed in this study are as follows; the reason why these non-Muslim women needed to translate the Qur’an, the audiences they addressed in their translations, the method they followed in their translations, the sources of their translations, the impact of their translations, whether they made any distortions in their translations and whether these translations are in circulation today. Since it would be beyond the scope of an article to discuss all the women who have translated the Qur’an, only the translations of non-Muslim women are dealt with.
