The Epistemological Significance of ʿIlm al-Mawhiba in Tafsīr

Abstract

This study explores the concept of ʿilm al-mawhiba, a key quality required of a mufassir in interpreting the Holy Qurʾān. The research is limited to the epistemological dimension of ʿilm al-mawhiba in classical tafsīr sources, its acquisition methods and its role in understanding the divine will. This study uses a systematic approach to show how ʿilm al-mawhiba, which is generally treated in the literature from a sufi perspective, has been recognized as an essential discipline for mufassirs since the period of systematization of the science of tafsīr. The originality of this study lies in identifying the distinctive features of this type of knowledge, which is grounded in the relationship between knowledge and deed and regarded as a divine favor, compared to other formal sciences. The aim of the study is to clarify the role of ʿilm al-mawhiba in the epistemology of tafsīr and its function in the process of Qurʾānic interpretation. In this direction, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods is employed to examine classical tafsīrs, procedural sources and other works on the subject. As a result of the study, it has been understood that ʿilm al-mawhiba is a divine gift from Allah, not limited to mere unveiling (kashf) and inspiration (ilhām), but framed within the relationship between knowledge and practice. Furthermore, it was concluded that ʿilm al-mawhiba plays a fundamental role beyond analytical and linguistic methods in the process of understanding the profound meanings of the Qurʾān and reaching the truths of Kalāmullāh.
