The Categories in Ibn Ṭumlūs and al-Fārābī's Influence

The categories, expressed as the most general predicates, were first systematized into a logical theory by Aristotle. This tradition was later continued by Islamic logicians following him. Al-Fārābī, a prominent figure of the Baghdad School, examined the subject of categories from various perspectives in works such as Kitāb al-Maqūlāt (The Book of Categories) and Kitāb al-Ḥurūf (The Book of Letters), following Aristotle’s lead. Similar works were also authored by thinkers such as Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Ṭayyib, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), and Ibn Rushd (Averroes). Ibn Ṭumlūs, one of the notable figures in the intellectual life of al-Andalus, briefly addressed all the main topics of logic in his al-Mukhtaṣar fī al-Manṭiq (A Summary on Logic), modeled after Aristotle’s Organon. This study examines Ibn Ṭumlūs’s understanding of categories and the possible influences of al-Fārābī on his thought. The absence of previous studies addressing Ibn Tumlūs’s understanding of categories in the context of al-Fārābī’s influence highlights a significant gap in the field, and this study aims to fill that gap by offering original contributions. The research employs qualitative methods, particularly document analysis, to collect data, which are then analyzed through comparison. The findings suggest that al-Fārābī played a significant role in shaping Ibn Ṭumlūs’s conception of the categories.

En genel yüklemler olarak ifade edilen kategoriler, ilk defa Aristoteles tarafından mantıksal bir kuram haline getirilmiştir. Aristoteles’ten sonra gelen İslâm mantıkçıları bu geleneği devam ettirmişlerdir. Bağdat Okulunun önemli temsilcilerden olan Fârâbî, Aristoteles’i takip ederek kategoriler konusunu Kitâbu’l-makûlât ve Kitâbu’l-Hurûf gibi eserlerinde çeşitli yönleriyle ele almıştır. Benzer isimde kitaplar Ebü’l-Ferec İbnü’t-Tayyib, İbn Sînâ ve İbn Rüşd vb. düşünürler tarafından da kaleme alınmıştır. Endülüs’teki düşünce hayatının önemli temsilcilerinden olan İbn Tumlûs, el-Muhtasar fi’l-mantık’ta Organon’u örnek alarak mantığın bütün konularını kısa bir şekilde incelemiştir. Bu çalışmada İbn Tumlûs’un kategori anlayışı ve Fârâbî’nin muhtemel etkileri ele alınmaktadır. Daha önce İbn Tumlûs’un kategori anlayışını Fârâbî’nin etkileri bağlamında ele alan çalışmanın olmaması bu alandaki önemli bir eksikliği gidermeyi amaçlayarak özgün katkılar sunmaktadır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesiyle veriler toplanmış, elde edilen veriler karşılaştırılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda İbn Tumlûs’un kategori anlayışının meydana gelişinde Fârâbî’nin önemli bir etkiye sahip olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
