The Background of a Caliphate Struggle: The Sage Caliph Ma’mūn and the Artist Caliph Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī

Abstract

Power struggles between uncle and nephew in Islāmic history have manifested themselves from the Asr-ı Saādet to the Umayyāds, from the Abbāsids to the later dynasties. Among these, the one with the most interesting and extraordinary features is the incident between the Abbāsid caliph al-Ma’mūn and his uncle Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī. This article, supported by modern studies and orientalist research as well as main sources, aims to see how the struggle of the people of science and wisdom and those dealing with art and music will end. In this context, it also addresses the outcome of the journey of reason and will within the realm of free thought, guided by melodies and emotions. To clarify the subject, examples from the lives of the musician Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī and the wise caliph al-Ma’mūn have been presented. The article focuses on their roles, state experiences, and the contributions of those around them, including artists and statesmen, to this process. After that, sections from the power struggle are presented from marriages to experiences, from commanders to statesmen and some analyses are made. This article, which aims to examine the power struggle between two members of a dynasty, centers on the strengths and weaknesses in governance of sages and artists through the lens of two caliphs, whom we prefer to describe as "the wise" and "the musician”. As a result of the study, some conclusions were drawn, and it was concluded that science and wisdom were more prominent than art in state administration.
