The Originalities of the Qur’anic Parables According to Muhammad Abū Zahra

Abstract

Many studies have been carried out on Qur'anic parables throughout the history. Muhammad Abū Zahra (d. 1394/1974), known for his original ideas in this field, is one of them. He not only discussed the parables theoretically, but also focused on their practical effects on the interpretation of the verses. In this study, it was observed that he concentrated on the style of the parables, the way they conveyed the subject, and the content of their messages. In his view, it was understood that the parables, in addition to being presented as proof that revelation is the word of Allah, have the purpose of giving lessons through reminding the ongoing traces of real events in history. In addition, he argues that the Qur'an emphasizes some of the common points of the Abrahamic religions through parables and underlines that they cannot be subjected to annulment. Another point of the study is that Abū Zahra considers the repetition of some parables necessary for the Islamic thought system to settle in the minds and for these thoughts to be reflected in practice. Abū Zahra argued that the Qur’ānic parables have declarative, iʿjazī, historical, unseen, linguistic, and jurisprudential dimensions and that many Qur'ānic parables contain these aspects. Furthermore, he successfully demonstrates these aspects through examples. This study focuses on the determination of Abū Zahra’s approach to parables in order to reveal the unique aspects of parables and to determine their effect on the understanding of verses. In this context, it focuses on how he concretized the declarative, iʿjazī, historical, unseen, linguistic, and jurisprudential dimensions of Qur'anic parables with practical examples in his works. In this study, by making use of Abū Zahra's tafsir Zahrat al-tafāsīr and other works dealing with Qur’ānic parables, the document analysis model of the qualitative research method was used to make determinations about his method of dealing with parables.
