The Role of Qiraat Imams Nâfi, Ibn Kathir and Ibn Âmir in Hadith Narration

Abstract

Hadiths are the carriers of the Sunnah, the second source of Islam. The Prophet recommended that his word be made known to others and prayed for those who transmitted it. For this reason, since the generation of the Companions, every Muslim from every profession has learned the words of the Messenger of Allah and endeavored to teach them. Qiraat scholars have also been interested in hadith in addition to their main areas of specialization and served the science of hadith by narrating them. The seven qiraats, known as al-qiraat al-sab‘a, have been accepted by scholars since the third century of Hijri and have survived to the present day. al-qiraat al-sab‘a are the recitations read by the scholars who lived in the first and second centuries of the Hijri calendar in Medina, Mecca, Damascus, Basra and Kufa, which were important centers of knowledge in the first centuries and are attributed to them. It is considered important to investigate the interest of the scholars of qiraat in the science of hadith and their efforts related to the science of hadith. For this reason, among the mentioned qiraat scholars, Nâfi' (d. 169/785), the qiraat scholar of Medina, Ibn Kathīr (d. 120/738), the qiraat scholar of Mecca, and Ibn Amir (d. 118/736), the qiraat scholar of Damascus, have been investigated by using the inductive method in terms of their teachers whom they narrated from and students who narrated hadith from them, their narrations in hadith books, the content of their narrations and their relationship to the field of qiraat. Their jarh and ta‘dil status in hadith narration have also been discussed. In the study, the positions of qiraat scholars in the science of hadith and their contributions to the science of hadith have been tried to be revealed.
