Ideal Age for Education and Teaching of the Holy Quran

Abstract

In Islamic societies, the teaching and learning of the Quran was seen as the basis, and the knowledge to be learned later was built on this basis. Qur’anic education and training, since the early years of Islam has become a prominent sign of the religion, and it is highly valued for the role it plays in instilling belief in Islam in the hearts of children. In the Islamic educational tradition, which began during the Asr al-Sa‘adah (Golden Age) and developed over the centuries, it was believed that knowledge acquired at a young age is like writing on stone, while knowledge acquired at an old age is like writing on water. Therefore, children’s education always began with Qur’anic instruction. Today, some of the primary challenges of Qur’anic education and training, specifically in formal education, are closely linked to age. The starting age of education, alongside other elements, play a vital role in determining the education's quality. Therefore, the primary focus of this research is to determine the optimal age for Qur’anic education and training, as well as other related issues. This research investigates this main problem by interpreting relevant literature in the context of historical experience. In the study, it has been concluded that the early ages representing childhood are more suitable for Qur’anic education and training.
