The Epistemological Dimension of 'The Teaching of The Names' (Taʿlîmü’l-Esmâ):The Beginning of Knowledge And Meaning Production İn The Qur’an

Abstract

The foundation of Islamic thought rests upon the consciousness and sense of responsibility constructed through revelation and knowledge. Within this framework, the Qur’anic narratives concerning the first human, Prophet Adam, go beyond merely informing about the beginning of human history; they present principles that determine the relationship between human beings, language, thought, and knowledge. The Qur’an emphasizes that humanity has been entrusted with a special responsibility (al-Baqara 2/30), and that fulfilling this responsibility is only possible through knowledge. A review of the literature shows that discussions of ta‘līm al-asmā’ have generally focused on the concept of ‘names’ (asmā’), with reference to interpretations in both classical and contemporary tafsīr works. In classical exegesis, the narrative of ta‘līm al-asmā’ has often been understood as a symbolic account affirming Adam’s superiority. However, such an approach overlooks the linguistic, intellectual, and epistemological depth contained within the Qur’anic narrative. This study aims to demonstrate that the account is not merely a symbolic story but, in fact, a discourse that should be reread in the context of human conceptual thought, epistemological capacity, and understanding of knowledge. Through an analysis based on the primary sources of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, the research examines—using a comparative method—the contributions of ta‘līm al-asmā’ to contemporary intellectual life in terms of its role as a source for language, thought, and knowledge.
