The Concept of "Exit" as a Form of Enlightenment
Abstract
This study aims to discuss the concept of “exit” from a philosophical perspective in light of Plato’s metaphysical thought and Kant’s critical philosophy. In doing so, it takes as its primary reference points the notions of anabasis in Plato’s Republic and ausgang in Kant’s essay “An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?”. The terms anabasis and ausgang, as employed by these two philosophers, will be analyzed within their conceptual and historical contexts, and their similarities and differences will be examined. There has been no previous study in the literature that compares these two concepts in the context of the notion of exit. The concept of exit encompasses both an ontological and epistemological ascent (a movement from below to above) and a rupture from social structures (a movement from inside to outside). Although Plato and Kant sometimes integrate these two meanings, they differ in the specific significance they attribute to the concept. However, both philosophers describe exit as an individual’s progression toward maturity. While immaturity is defined as an individual’s tendency to remain within social conformity and comfort, leaving decisions about their own life to a guardian or caretaker. The movement toward maturity necessitates breaking free from these dependencies and beginning to exercise independent reason. Nevertheless, this process requires the individual to relinquish their existing comfort, thereby entailing a disruptive transformation. The destructive characterization of exit arises from its nature as an act that prioritizes critique, rejection, and abandonment of existing structures rather than a constructive process. In this context, the study highlights and interprets the concept of exit through a critical and comparative analysis. To explore how this concept takes shape in the thoughts of these two philosophers, the study employs philosophical hermeneutics and critical reading methodologies.
