Religious Studies and The Comparative Perspective
Abstract
Ninian Smart, a prominent figure in the development of the comparative approach in Religious Studies and the phenomenological model in Religious Education, addresses the comparative study of religions and its implications in this paper. He emphasizes that the pluralistic and intercultural perspective in Religious Studies allows for consideration of the diversity in societies’ religious and cultural development processes, provides an opportunity to reconsider theories about human nature from a different angle, and offers insight into the complex structure of religion and the development of common values within a global society by examining new religious movements and symbolic themes. Moreover, Smart anticipates that in a globalized world, understanding the beliefs, lifestyles, and worldviews of others will become increasingly important, and he asserts that religious studies must take this diversity into account. Considering the current state of research in Religious Studies, it can be said that Smart's foresight has indeed come to fruition.
