Abstract
The phenomenon of war and peace is an important issue that has shaped human history. Accordingly, the study has taken on the problem of why people and nations fight and what the religions that have a great number of members, and the current universal approaches of these religions’ judicial and ethical boundaries are, in terms of preventing wars and establishing peace, and besides, the possibility of peace education to solve these issues. In this regard, the theoretical legitimacy of war and moral extent of it, its resolution through peace, the rights of civilians in conflicts, the preventability of their losses; religions’, especially Islam’s, approach to war and peace, its legal, moral and social boundaries; universal approaches in terms of the rules to be followed, peace movements which is a solution seeking act, and peace education issues will be discussed from a sociological point of view using literature review method. The study also aims to offer solutions to prevent war and establish peace. In the results of the research; it is concluded that although religions allow war in compulsory situations, they do not encourage war, and that the incitement and call discourses reflect the religious understanding, perception and lifestyles of the representatives of religion instead of the divine source; and in the background, it is seen that they use religion as a tool to legitimize different economic, political and sociological motives. The attitude of Islam is to prevent war; prioritizing legal and humane values in case of war. International law is shaped by powerful states and works in their favour, and cannot go beyond showing formal loyalty. Even though the public’s attention is drawn to in international conventions, declarations and peace actions, they remain weak and ineffective in preventing the imperialist powers and arms manufacturers. It is understood that in the countries which tend to establish peace, the dissemination of peace education with an academic system in formal and non-formal education institutions, and the methodical processing of the peace messages of religions, especially Islam, may be an important method and opportunity.
